Noisy power tailgate: causes and fixes
Normal operation sounds like a smooth, consistent motor. If the sound has changed since installation, investigate.
Type 1 — a clunk at the start: usually a loose mounting point or the rod rubbing the weatherstrip. Listen left versus right while cycling slowly.
Type 2 — a strained motor growing louder: usually increased mechanical resistance, such as dry hinges or a misaligned gate.
Type 3 — noise at final closing: usually the soft-close latch interacting with the striker, or the gate not aligning.
Initial checks: clean and inspect all mounting points, look for obstructions in the tailgate opening, and compare with the day of installation.
Avoid applying generic grease to the strut rods — it attracts dust and accelerates wear. Use only the lubricant specified in the manual.
